Here below you can read the article written by the fashion designer herself, describing the history of Orly Couture and the importance of her ecofriendly choises regarding her fashion line.

“Without realizing it, I started this line as a teenager. It was a way for me to be able to wear the designs I saw in magazines, when I was still on an allowance.
I would sift through the pages of W magazine and always end up with two or three looks that I had to have. So, I would take a trip to the vintage/thrift stores in Los Angeles. There, I would find pieces that had one element of what I was trying to re-create. I would take it home, go to my mother’s sewing machine, and try to accomplish the rest on my own.

I never went to school for fashion. I grew up making clothes with my mom and took a few classes at a local fabric shop, in Calabasas. Those classes, combined with EXTENSIVE trial and error, taught me what I needed to know, in order to alter the vintage garments I bought.

I officially started my business in 2007 and I’ve found great success ever since. I’ve been picked up by one of Hollywood’s hottest stylist, Ilaria Urbanati, at her high end, boutique Confederacy. I am presenting Orly Couture at Fashion Fix, a weekly fashion event meant to increase awareness for emerging nyc designers. Ultimately, I’m working everyday to build my business and spread the word; Eco-living is the way of the future!

Eco-Living is just a part of life in California. It’s not considered trendy, or fabulous, it’s just a way of living. When you are surrounded by nature, it’s easier to be reminded that you want to protect it. So when I realized that I had something here; a style that people liked, and a concept that was sustainable, it was a no brainer. I’m proud of what I do. I create clothing that women get excited to wear and I’m able to re-use the textiles that have already been produced. Often times these clothes would be thrown out and added to our landfills. Through Orly Couture, I’m able to create fashion relevant garments that people get excited to purchase all over again! Eco-fashion is one of the many ways we can spread the word about a better way to live. I understand that feeling of, “oh, this one decision, on one day, at this one moment, it’s not going to change anything.” But it will! It’s like anything else, it’s only a matter of time until something becomes a habit. And getting in the habit of making better choices for out planet, it’s a good habit to be in. As my business grows, I plan to continue making recycled, one of kind pieces, along side a line that I produce. I have, however, been looking into green production options. Organic cotton fabrics, energy efficient manufacturers, etc. Although, the reality of running a business comes banging on my door every day, I am committed to finding a better way to run MY business, one day at a time.”
